Our Brief History

Delta Tau Delta was founded in 1858 at Bethany College in northern West Virginia. The fraternity was founded out of a dispute within the Neotrophian Literary Society, an organization that allowed students to practice and demonstrate their skills in poetry, public speaking and writing essays. Eight men saw fault within the organization and decided to form a secret society at the college, which would go on to become the organization we see today. These men were united by a common set of moral principles: Truth, Courage, Faith, and Power. These principles guided Delt through its founding and continue to do so to this day.

Here at Allegheny College, we have the distinct honor of being the Alpha Chapter of the Fraternity. This distinction was passed to us in 1875 from the chapter at Ohio Wesleyan University, and we've proudly held it ever since! Although a lot has changed since 1875, our principles remain the same! Here at Alpha, we are proud to carry on the traditions of those before us and guide those who come after.
